Pro DJ!

How important is music to Anna Jet?

Well, it certainly costs money!

When we opened the bar in Soi 2, we spent around 26,000 baht. Sony music centre and 4 speakers. Terrible! But pretty typical of most bars (in fact better than most).

Four years ago when we opened Anna Jet we rented Denon DJ kit but only used locally made amps and speakers. Our first DJ pawned the new kit, replaced it with 2nd hand stuff and did a runner with 3 months rent! The owners were looking for him for months but accepted that we were innocent parties and just left us with the 15 year old kit! The DJ? He was probably found in a ditch somewhere.

So 3 years ago we had to buy new Denon dual CD players and a mixer. Cost around 65,000 baht. Last year we upgraded our amps, installed a cross-over and 6 new speakers - about 110,000 baht.

This summer we've upgraded our outside speakers and we've just had to replace the Denon kit. 3 years life (and yes we had had them serviced) seems pretty short so this time we have changed to Pioneer. Got a really good discount and only had to fork out 54,000 baht.

Joe is like a pig-in-shit: stickers plastered all over his little booth and is scratching and stuff.

I'm working out how many Heinekens we have to sell to pay for it all!

In all fairness , when we, a Yank and some Canucks, were at the Annajet we didn't ask the DJ to scrap that Euro crap and leave on the rock n roll. It always started at 9 pm and we would always leave as soon as our drinks were finished. Whined to Anna and me thinks , you too Peter; but never bothered the DJ. Tell Joe we'll be there in January. Hope he cares. We'll have some baht Joe. wink wink

Thanks for the comment John.

I know that we don't all share the same taste in Music and I believe that we can't please everyone all the time. As you point out, we use 9pm as a watershed between what I describe as classic Rock and Pop and begin to move, normally through American Hip Hop/ R&B to reach our style of House music around 10pm.

Incidentially, a major source of House Music was/is Chicago!

We have our own style of House - strong beat but with strong melody and often moving into Trance. It's what our customers expect and many come to the bar because there is simply no-one else playing quite this mix in Pattaya.

Lots of customers comment that we are different from other bars - I hope so. Obviously Anna and the way the girls play together make a big contribution. But our music pulls it all together into a party/club atmosphere.

We have some great DJs here that mix genres. It blows me away how they will go from Kanye West to Ray Charles to Pink Floyd (as an example) and it works! A number of years ago I paid one of these DJs $500 (something like that) to make a wedding tape for me.
